Does it seem like your posts on Instagram don’t get seen and you’re not getting enough likes?
This article will help you understand Instagram Features and how they affect the Algorithm so that you get the most of your Social Media Marketing efforts.
Using the various IG features is good for your profile. It gives your content the opportunity to get seen in a way that appeals to different viewers. Some people enjoy watching and engaging with stories more than feed posts and vice versa. Some features can lead to unique viewership. The point of social media is to be social and engage with others.
Engagement is the SECRET to the algorithm!
Here’s a list of ways to increase your engagement in order to improve your views and audience growth, which are the goals for most business owners in the first place.
Polls, Questions and Quizzes
These are located within stories. Polls and Quizzes are the easiest way to get your viewers to interact with you. It allows them to share their opinion with a simple tap. You’ll start understanding your audience better if you use these regularly. Depending on your content and your viewers the Questions sticker might get a little less engagement than the 2 above. The more your audience engages with your stories, the more the algorithm will recognize that they enjoy your content and will therefore place your story bubble at the front of their feed instead of at the end.
Hashtags are like the keywords associated with your content in order to be found.
You will need to explore hashtags to engage with others outside of your own following. I call this, external engagement.
If you don’t spend 30 minutes a day (at the very least and ideally at the time right before or right after you post) it will be extremely difficult to get your posts seen by a new audience. You need to explore by liking and commenting on other people’s content so that they may get curious and look to see who you are and if they are interested in your posts.
(As of December 2020, the search area has been slightly modified allowing for keywords to be searched without a hashtag. Make sure you use the right keywords in your posts.)
Ensure to add locations to your posts and your stories. If you’re using a scheduling app to post, not all of them have this option so you’ll have to physically add this to your post from Instagram.
Stories allow you to add locations too! These will help your posts get seen in whatever location you target. I personally enjoy working with small businesses in my area and searched for local services this way. There’s a special connection that comes with local businesses supporting each other.
Don’t forget to externally engage through locations!
Going LIVE, alerts followers that you are recording a live video. Let’s not forget that humans are nosy. Someone who follows you (even the least engaged) might become curious as to what you have going on and join in to see. Use an attention-grabbing title before you hit the record button.
Don’t go live without a decent topic, rambling on aimlessly won’t keep anyone interested.
DM’s and Comments
Start genuine conversations within the Direct Messages, on replies to posts and stories. Frequent comments or conversations with certain people, cause the algorithm to favor your posts/stories on those feeds if they follow you.
Educational videos are a great way to share your expertise and establish authority for your brand. Use IGTV videos for this or any long-form content. Use hashtags on these and save them to your highlights. IGTV videos hang around a bit longer on the home page than a regular post.
Reels and Guides
As of 2020, these 2 features have been added. (No explanation has been provided for those who have not received it except for the fact that Verified or accounts with greater followers usually have access before others.)
Reels do appear on the home screen, for a longer time-span than regular posts.
Guides is the newest feature made available in 11/2020 to general users. If you have it, use it!
